Roger Allen Nieland 1936-2003

Roger Nieland, age 67, of Breda, died of an apparent heart condition Tuesday evening, July 8, 2003, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2003, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrants were Father James Smith and Father Dennis Sefcik.

Lector was Marge Wittrock. Gift bearers were Mr. Nieland's four children. Mass servers were Jim and John Grabner and Ryan Adams.

Honorary pallbearers were Dennis Vonnahme, Cliff Neumayer, John Westergaard, Bob Gregory, Mike Broderson, and Chuck Thatcher.

Casket bearers were Richard Mueggenberg, Dale Mueggenberg, Joe Wittrock, Richard Huegerich and Mike Uhlenkamp.

Burial was at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

Friends called at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 2:30 p.m. Friday. A rosary was recited at 3 p.m. Friday by the Catholic Order of Foresters. There was a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. Friday by the parish. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left for the Future Farmers of America (F.F.A.)

Mr. Nieland was born on March 3, 1936, at Carroll, Iowa, the son of Louis and Martha (Braun) Nieland. He spent his lifetime in the Breda community and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1954. He was married to Mary Ann Sefcik on June 8, 1968, at St. Peter and Paul Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. The couple farmed northwest of Breda and in 1973 moved to their farm southwest of Breda.

He was a member of St. Bernard Parish and presently served on the Parish Council, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. [sic] Mr. Nieland was a founding Director of the Iowa Ethanol Coop, presently known as Value Add Plus, and is a Board Member of the Breda Telephone Corporation. He formerly served as an Officer of the Carroll County Extension Service and Carroll County Beef Producers Association. Mr. Nieland enjoyed dancing, traveling, and spending time at the family lake home.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, of Breda; children, Janet Renze and her husband, Kevin, of Mitchellville, Maryland, John Nieland and his wife, Anne, of Urbandale, Denise Nieland of Urbandale, and James Nieland and his wife, Elizabeth of Davenport; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Anthony [James Anthony]; brothers, David Nieland of Breda and Mark Nieland of South Amboy, New Jersey; mother-in-law, Agnes Sefcik of Lake City; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Al Sefcik of Pocahontas, Father Dennis Sefcik of Lake City, Audie Sefcik of Council Bluffs, and Sally Douglas of Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and father-in-law Adolph Sefcik.
